Poetry and parenting - mother and child relationship - Children and Books PodCast

Show notes

The mother and child relationship is something super important. What does the mother and child relationship mean to us? How and why do we get along so well? And what does the mother and child bond have to do with overcoming fears? And what makes poetry so relevant in this context?

Today we both talk about our bond, parenting, poetry and our project. We talk about how we came to publish Lubina's children's books worldwide and what motivates us to publish a new PodCast episode every week.

00:00:49: and with with double the Scottish contingent maybe you could tell us something about your experience with writing with the children and

00:01:02: poetry.

00:01:07: Well I suppose it all began when I was a child and would love to read in poetry and I think.

00:01:16: That's where I filled my world from as a child reading so much.

00:01:25: And reading a lot of poetry as well and I think.

00:01:31: Poetry as a child is very funny funny.

00:01:41: Poetry now but I still quite like children's poetry not too bad think I'm a little bit different totally interesting because I love I just this base I've brought

00:01:54: children poems books with children poems to to have it as a gift for other people when I when somebody has birthday I said this year

00:02:06: children poetry because it's so funny

00:02:12: there's a poet Michael Rosen he's quite famous.

00:02:20: I'm in the UK and beyond actually and he writes very funny poems and child and.

00:02:28: Having my friends round to play and making him sit down so that I could be.

00:02:41: And do right you're on your own children points to is it coming.

00:02:47: I haven't really written children's poems that supposed partly because I'm not sure what I do with them.

00:02:53: Because I was in university quite recently Glasgow.

00:03:03: There's quite a lot of opportunity to have quality published but it's mostly adults

00:03:11: so now I can't really say have children's parties and I was a child and I do remember silly poem I suppose,

00:03:24: how to get coffee with an anvil on your head.

00:03:29: Which is like like a Looney Tunes cartoon suppose someone.

00:03:39: Yeah I remember the the poem it's hard to get comfy with an anvil on your head

00:03:47: and doesn't do you understand what an anvil do you know

00:03:53: you know it's it's a block that a blacksmith would use your it's very big.

00:04:03: It's huge and it's heavy so it's hard to get comfy with an anvil on your head maybe it would change when you get it right to dream,

00:04:12: Bondi maybe then you have got somebody you you are writing for this poem.

00:04:20: An audience audience a little private audience and in another kind of writing poems to write lyrics for songs.

00:04:35: Do I have to let the pass I think I.

00:04:41: Joke the lyrics considering I do or have written poetry I think it's quite a different thing I think.

00:04:52: In some ways you need to be a bit more.

00:04:55: Literally lyrics.

00:05:03: Make a pic quality of poetic language.

00:05:09: So I have written in the past.

00:05:20: How.

00:05:22: Abacus for me for the possibility I and the beginning I started to his poems and then I had some possibility in my minority for the radio to make lyrics to make lyrics and it was my

00:05:37: window of

00:05:39: but not too much because it's doesn't need for doesn't have to be too too complicated or too

00:05:48: much sorted needs to as-11 needs to be lower.

00:05:52: But I had the feeling ok here can I put my poetry the soul to the to the lyrics.

00:06:00: Yeah I'm glad you say that I remember as a child maybe 10.

00:06:10: Me and my friend started about.

00:06:12: And it was very silly it was like it was kind of inspire children's Coventry like Michael Rosen send where is quite a bit of surd.

00:06:23: And we made because her mum was our music teacher she had recording equipment music lyrics.

00:06:35: I suppose that's my most sustained attempt to writing lyrics I just sent you one of your poems so she might want to read it out yeah would you like it says not based.

00:06:49: And it's called a transformer and it says.

00:06:55: When my dad gets really angry she really transforms your guaranteed some space it flies in all directions and that is the worst bit.

00:07:05: Gets really angry he really transforms really starts to cry and it's eyes go round and see us,

00:07:14: I sometimes wonder why has place in your family down definitely.

00:07:25: Rhythm two things often in our family for someone's birthday someone Limerick Limerick.

00:07:36: Yeah short URS rhyming poem yeah yeah and Rachel did you read a lot of children's books to your kids,

00:07:47: yeah yeah I did Josie particularly when she was.

00:07:54: I was reading to her from from birth I think because.

00:08:01: Age 2 it was it would be hard to

00:08:06: you know to stop reading books to her she would demand them all day long that's her favourite thing

00:08:13: he would just want books and books and books and more books and car journeys as well we had to endlessly make up stories on car journeys to keep her happy.

00:08:27: And there was one particular story Danny the Champion of the World is a Roald Dahl story I think.

00:08:36: And yeah and Josie particularly loved this story and

00:08:42: it's in the film because the story was a bit old for her I think but she's seen the film when she was quite young and so we had to continually make up stories about

00:08:53: somebody falling down a hole and Josie rescuing we had.

00:09:02: Endless variations story

00:09:06: you know when you know like the the Harry Potter books she was reading them herself but she also absolutely delighted in

00:09:14: telling her dad reading them to her more than me I think she was she was impressed with the voices this better than books

00:09:25: and how would you describe your relationship because the interesting is for me it's not interesting because I've only one son ok this is a relationships we have to have got different relation to every child.

00:09:41: Yeah yeah I've got three daughters for their all quite different and.

00:09:48: Yeah I don't know I don't know how I actually a few years ago they.

00:09:56: Payroll arguing with one another about who was our favourite child and and I thought we'd we probably,

00:10:06: done it right because they all insisted that they were the favourite so each one of them was like the favourite.

00:10:15: Well we've probably done ok then they all think they're,

00:10:23: in care about work together I think I talk about work,

00:10:30: do you mummify problems.

00:10:39: Writing project last year I mean an interesting thing that came up for me just thinking about this was I.

00:10:51: You know because of the nature of my work and that it's you know it's confidential I've never really spoken with my children so I'm.

00:11:01: I just wonder how how that's been for you JC what's been your experience of that.

00:11:13: I think.

00:11:15: I think it's never seemed to me but you haven't.

00:11:25: It's just kind of you that you wouldn't because of the nature of it so it's like a book

00:11:31: you didn't have open yeah yeah it is what's left you to the decision of doing something similar like a Rachel.

00:11:43: Being interested in the psychotherapist last year because I.

00:11:53: Was furloughed from a job size.

00:11:57: Still being paid but not working but it was it was working in hotel it was.

00:12:05: Professional driver job and I was just thinking about what I wanted to do long-term career wise rather just job wise realise that I'm,

00:12:17: wanted to do something that wasn't necessarily for a private company.

00:12:23: Something a bit more maybe in you know like a public sector type job something like that I was just thinking about lots of different options and quite a lot.

00:12:37: Me looking into a kind of counselling therapy as a potential career was a good idea and validated.

00:12:50: I'm sorry if she thinks,

00:12:53: I could do it and I only have got another question you grow up on an island didn't you village by the sea hiya do you think it formed you as a person I think so we lived in London until I was out 9 so.

00:13:14: I think definitely moving from a very suburban busy and in some ways in personal community to a very,

00:13:24: small definitely have affected me and lots of ways and that kind of romantic idea us,

00:13:33: writing and being privacy.

00:13:36: I don't think I appreciated things like that until I was a bit older maybe until 19 yeah just for teenagers that this difficult to be far away from the life ceiling

00:13:50: disconnect

00:13:52: and how is your relationship to end to your end sisters

00:14:03: I think that's the difference for me I don't really feel like I have a such a.

00:14:10: Easily located heritage maybe I yeah because you you changed because.

00:14:19: Yeah because I didn't necessarily grow up where my.

00:14:25: Other relatives yeah but I think it's a question of age I'm now 44 ends with 26

00:14:33: I think it was not so important it is very interesting with every year you are older you look more into the past into into the bigger perfect.

00:14:46: I think I can see that a little bit.

00:14:49: Twitter good to talk to finish with arrived we have got a right maybe maybe you have one.
