Show notes

Today on the Children and Books PodCast, Eliza Alvarez told us about her job as an animator and filmmaker for children's animated films. She ha tuns explained how these films are produced, what excites her about them and what impact her own child had on them.

How is a children's animated film made? What do I have to pay total attention to? What makes an animated film so magical? How long does it actually take for such a film to become visible to the public?

00:00:00: Hello and welcome to the children in books podcast today we are on the 8th episode with the wonderful guess that's a Lisa

00:00:12: and Alicia is a film maker of film animator for children on stories maybe you want to introduce yourself.

00:00:21: Hello my name is Alisa putting I come from Poland from Brockworth and living like this where I make animations for children.

00:00:37: Hello Alicia I live very welcome to you and maybe I can say it was a few months ago that you will called me and then you came to my beautiful University

00:00:50: and then we started to work together on the project and which project does this I think maybe you like to say something about it

00:01:01: yeah it was what the old one tells it's serious for pre-school children based on the European

00:01:12: Legends and fairy tales so it's it's a serious where each episode is dedicated different creature from from the Serbian.

00:01:22: Daggers.

00:01:24: Yeah and I was very very happy about your help with that with a project because it was not only a lot of research info.

00:01:37: Another really cool interesting story points in Portugal

00:01:45: me too when I see the pictures when I saw the pictures or some ideas and my fantasy came Stu to work

00:01:54: live cricket

00:01:57: yeah today is with us Rachel from today she is in everyone

00:02:06: Rachel you you told us before we start

00:02:11: that you had a look at the site of a visa into which was your impression it looks really really interesting

00:02:22: and I was.

00:02:26: Wondering the miss actually the Elisa and weather.

00:02:33: Animations in language as well.

00:02:41: Yes so up till now I mean the project is really in it.

00:02:46: Beginning face so we were doing along 2020 the concept development and their V

00:02:55: centra teen treatment and animatic and the enigmatic is in 3 languages so it's

00:03:04: well now in the four because I just subtitles in English man German Serbian and flowers

00:03:16: yeah you can actually already here it in the languages we didn't Polish but you can.

00:03:26: Elizabeth I mean oh the Slavic languages have something in common.

00:03:34: Yeah I mean different language you can understand

00:03:42: from the beginning play you have the idea yes it is a real character.

00:03:50: To work in animation I mean I like it because somehow thanks to the fact that you have to.

00:04:00: Take care of 1 subjects for such a long time with animation you think a lot about it and somehow you make go more into depth

00:04:10: she really needs I don't know this like this German you say like a long rest so so like you really need

00:04:19: is marathon a stamina so there are many firms that take.

00:04:28: I don't know 7 Eurostar.

00:04:32: To come to being I mean long service and waste children's series is actually similar I mean from idea

00:04:41: to the realisation you can count first or 34 years it is a long process

00:04:54: projector that time somehow.

00:04:57: Goes well is going towards another one is maybe having a break answer and we say it is long leg

00:05:10: until it's finished OK and which of the which of the moods or which of the figures you you lost.

00:05:23: Are you you feel the more most close to so now of course the money bringing dragon because this is the story that we develop.

00:05:35: The most

00:05:36: so there is the character design and how it should look like they're already awesome 3D test and of course the animatic where where the characters already have dialogues and you can really feel.

00:05:54: Your character so by now I think this one

00:06:02: they noticed that in each of them there is something and this is the thing with haggis and Fairytales because sometimes they are very general

00:06:12: this is left side the challenge to to find some character to them maybe we can say the interesting with the Dragon as he brings money.

00:06:23: But he likes to eat millet porridge for it.

00:06:28: He gets offended like a small child when she gets some past that is suddenly too.

00:06:36: Stadia with one the old one there's that is magical fairytale creatures

00:06:46: let's say taken down from the pedestal and the they get like real flesh and Bone and so to drink and maybe identify with them or maybe 7 times even

00:06:59: feel smarter actually curious which is your favourite.

00:07:09: Lubina question I think it's for me it's not it's not yet

00:07:18: but I have got a favourite because it needs some more a bit more to be developed that I see more now I loved the car I don't know how it is how we call it on English.

00:07:30: Willo the Wisp.

00:07:33: You know we will always like small small lights that are in the in the forest that can guide you but also mislead you

00:07:47: yeah but they also things like that now the Dragon is the best because it's already Heather is Explorer

00:07:56: Webbs yesterday with talks to French spotafriend production company

00:08:04: I mean small but very nice.

00:08:08: They are interested in the project and this is this would be so cool if if this would get like really International.

00:08:16: So fingers crossed yes we do

00:08:24: interesting because it's such a long time looking forward to 5 years for one animation film animation for children and son.

00:08:33: So you definitely have to.

00:08:37: Strong motivation in that's my question what motivates that you are in this film making for children cos it's so special.

00:08:48: Yes so for me somehow it was a natural consequence

00:08:55: I was doing animation because children are actually the ones who watch animation the most.

00:09:03: Didn't need to let they do something something against

00:09:11: ok like there is a lot of my colleagues don't want to do animation for children that Civic Lee Evans and see that say something like I just want to do for adults in

00:09:26: I really love it I love children with their imagination and and sense of humour which is sometimes episodes

00:09:36: and how they are

00:09:41: and you know I think they are really cool audience and the other hand it is just let's say a kind of formation.

00:09:51: Because I know there is a lot of content that is maybe that I wouldn't like to shout to my my children.

00:10:00: So I'm hoping somehow to create something valuable.

00:10:07: I'm hoping to stay there and I'm creating something very ok but I'm trying

00:10:16: no no you're not trying you are doing it by

00:10:28: merchandise so like a lot of animation series are almost like commercials

00:10:36: for the merchandise that they are selling it is actually the fact.

00:10:40: Manage production companies earn more money with the merchandise tin

00:10:46: films that you're not crazy

00:10:51: I don't want to name any titles

00:10:58: yeah but it's like I noticed with with my kid and also with my friends children there are certain animations for children with children gets really aggressive after watching

00:11:10: so so this is very crazy I mean I was having my dad because.

00:11:18: Like I was thinking yeah I know what's too much TV anyways and I'm like spending time of of the bedtime

00:11:29: bring children to the nature at Notts to the TV and so I'm better on the other hand they will be watching television anyways and.

00:11:39: Yeah so that was for me like a really connection between and Arts

00:11:52: and it was kind of like a you know like a natural consequence like arts which was my passion and film so this one plus one

00:12:02: what's animation.

00:12:08: That's great your website looks really interesting I had a look at the the alphabet.

00:12:15: And I love the way that you are is so playful.

00:12:22: And you know the way that you kinda create the letters out of the action of the animation.

00:12:31: Just to give an example of how much work goes into say 5-minutes animation.

00:12:42: So as standard for animation or when already all the designs and all the story is ready you any made something between 3

00:12:53: 10 seconds per day depending on the technique

00:12:57: but what I was saying that was 5-years this includes story development design development switch.

00:13:09: The most important face because if you don't have a nice story then it doesn't matter how well and you might do this

00:13:18: 10 seconds per day for a Mitre sing using traditional

00:13:33: fairy stories fairy tales.

00:13:35: Because I think we've talked a lot about fairy tales podcast.

00:13:47: In the work that we do the children.

00:13:53: What do you think that Mrs fairy tales in the table.

00:14:03: What you saying just now that contributing something to know what children might be watching on TV.

00:14:10: And insurance policy yeah wondering that.

00:14:20: Yes I like pretty one of the the things I remember most from sitting with.

00:14:32: Weather woman and they were unfortunately no man but.

00:14:45: I think you should be more mate anyway sitting with in a group and when she was reading to ask fairytales.

00:14:55: Stories.

00:14:58: I mean these are stories that every all the transmitted from mouth to mouth throughout and very very long time so.

00:15:12: How much more than the story I have the feeling and I think like children the ready I can confirm it somehow.

00:15:22: It's difficult for a 4 children series 2 to find golden middle because.

00:15:30: They might also be too heavy when it comes to moral.

00:15:37: Amount of information near the thing that I was saying that

00:15:45: how to transfer them into a concise story where you really have some dramaturgy and something is Happening because for example especially with Saga

00:15:56: you know like.

00:16:00: Portrait of the character so to find a specific story you need to make me sometimes at 12 great partner 4th.

00:16:14: When they're when does Teresa when I finish I hope it is

00:16:21: is that how angry about they are too far away from the original let's see.

00:16:30: I think when were you no talk when I hear it but I most love is that one one figure what is too big for you

00:16:39: the horse the giant because they're we don't have just a story which is written down and we can play with the figure.

00:16:53: Nurses very lovely because you can you can see which which issues or which what will what will happen.

00:17:04: Yeah I also like this story a lot song The Giant.

00:17:09: It's Peter that he's so strong and so be it but it's also his curse and then he destroys her over house and themes of the p.

00:17:23: Should the arrow and yeah and I don't want to

00:17:30: spoilers animation.

00:17:47: It is very important for me to to touch some subjects that are better universal other or.

00:17:57: Important for

00:17:59: the state of development so you know like the friendship or keeping together a working as a team or things like that but.

00:18:14: It is important for me also that it doesn't stick out in the first place because I think the as soon as kids

00:18:23: someone is trying to point the finger doesn't work I mean the best way of learning is by playing

00:18:36: that's also the things like the alphabet it's about learning English and the alphabet

00:18:46: but it's also Barbie's role models like

00:18:51: main character needs or he's a very positive thinker so even when he fails he tries again so it's like this

00:19:04: transmit in this kind of

00:19:08: even from failure can come something positive so important to have some something underlying

00:19:17: yeah

00:19:20: yeah I love that stupid I think they know

00:19:37: yeah they understand much more then we.

00:19:40: Sometimes think so wow thank you thank you for the for opening your your word of animations and for this lovely conversation where is 22 minutes now.

00:19:55: And I think lubina you can start your Auto.

00:20:00: No branko I don't like to stop now it's just so interesting I just wanted to say thank you because so inspiring X32

00:20:15: from outside what I'm doing like from day today.

00:20:23: Move my keyframes and my characters to reflect on that together with you yeah thank you.

00:20:36: Yeah ok so I will Franco ok thank you thank you Rachael for your supporting and for your.

00:20:47: Prison send your questions thank you Alicia for your openness today it was so lovely to talk with you it was yesterday on German normally 2 but it's for me every time in thing that you have

00:21:00: different different it goes to different directions

00:21:08: different different a different story this a nice and so thank you to all who are listening to us.

00:21:26: Music.
